Launching R.O. Writer - Database Wizards and Imports

Several database functions have been added to the standard launch process to make sure that

• R.O. Writer can connect to the database correctly.
• Your database contains the information required for the upgraded features in R.O. Writer 3.0 and higher.

NOTE: The new End User License Agreement (EULA) window appears the first time R.O. Writer is launched after an upgrade.

Database Connection Wizards

Whenever you launch, R.O. Writer attempts to connect to the database selected in Data Locations > Setup Stores. If R.O. Writer can connect to the database successfully, R.O. Writer continues to launch.

If R.O. Writer cannot connect to the database, one of the database wizards opens:

• Database Upgrade Wizard where you can upgrade the database to the correct version.
• Database Selection Wizard where you can select another database or open Data Locations > Setup Stores to change the connection information.

R.O. Writer Imports Registry Settings

In previous versions of R.O. Writer, user settings were stored in the registry for each user on each machine. As a result, user settings had to be configured and maintained on each workstation.

User-based registry settings are those configuration settings unique to each user and machine. For example, the settings on the File menu in Configuration.

R.O. Writer 3.0 and higher have been re-programmed to look for user settings in the database instead of the registry. As a result, user settings need to be imported into the database so that R.O. Writer can find them.

You do not need to do anything to import the registry settings into the database. R.O. Writer does it for you at launch.

The normal launch process has been upgraded to check the database for registry settings specific to the current user and machine. If there are no required settings in the database, R.O. Writer begins importing those settings from the registry on the local machine.

R.O. Writer Imports Report Files

In previous versions of R.O. Writer, reports file (*.rpt) were stored locally in the Term folder of each machine. As a result, report files had to be maintained on each machine.

Report files include the standard system reports and form types you use on a daily basis.

R.O. Writer 3.0 has been redesigned to store report files in the database. To make this transition easier, R.O. Writer imports report files from the Term folder to the database every time you launch R.O. Writer.
