Tiremetrix

Tires manufactured for sale in the United States are required to register the Department of Transportation (DOT) number embedded into the sidewall of the tire.

The DOT number on a tire.

This DOT number must be on both the inner and outer walls of the tire and located near the rim. Unlike serial numbers, DOT numbers are not unique to each tire. Instead, they identify where the tire was manufactured, the tire size, the manufacturer code, and the week and year the tire was made. As a result, a set of four tires can have the same DOT number or different DOT numbers depending on where and when the tire was made.

United States law requires that tire distributors and dealers electronically register DOT numbers on tires sold. R.O. Writer provides a way for you to enter DOT numbers on the tire parts posted to repair orders.

The Edit Part window with all the DOT information circled.

When the repair order is finalized, the data is transmitted to Central Service. Then, Central Service extracts the DOT data and transmits it to Tiremetrix every day. Tiremetrix handles registering the DOT information.

Please watch the following video for an overview of using Tiremetrix for DOT tracking.

Configuring R.O. Writer

After you have signed up for Tiremetrix, you must make sure that R.O. Writer is configured correctly.

Prerequisites

You must be using R.O. Writer 3.0 with Central Service enabled. Data must be transmitted from R.O. Writer 3.0 to Central Service regularly.

You must have a parts department group configured as the tire group. Only tires included in the tire group are included in Tire Quote searches.

Make Sure DOT is Required for the Tire Group

The tire group is a parts department group designated as the tire group. Verify that your tire group is configured correctly.

Open the Configuration module and click Configuration menu > Parts > Part Department Groups. Select the tire group in the dropdown list.

The tire group with the relevant fields circled.

Edit the Tire Disclaimer (if Needed)

Depending on your state or local laws, you may need to add a statement to your repair order disclaimer advising customers that their tire DOT data will be registered.

The information registered includes the following:

To edit your repair order disclaimer, open the Configuration module and click Configuration menu > Repair Order > Disclaimer.

The Edit Disclaimer with Repair Order selected.

Modify your statement and click Save > OK to save your changes.

Entering DOT Numbers in R.O. Writer

When a tire in the tire group is added to a repair order, the posted part includes a Tire Info button. The Tire Info button is red when the tire part has empty DOT fields.

Click the red Tire Info button. The Tire Information section appears with a table. The number of rows in the table matches the quantity. There is a separate DOT field for each tire.

The Edit Part window with all the DOT information circled.

When the repair order is finalized, the data is transmitted to Central Service.

Data Extraction to Tiremetrix

When you are first signed up for Tiremetrix, three years of DOT data from history is transmitted to Tiremetrix. After that initial transmission, DOT data is extracted from Central Service and transmitted to Tiremetrix every day.

The information extracted and transmitted to Tiremetrix includes the following:
